Lieutenant Eve White works for LAPD, a homicide cop, who believes in evidence and science. When she is confronted with the dead body of a priest, left humiliated,on the altar of his church, although everybody claims he was a well-loved man, she sees herself faced with a case full of religion. Nonsense, as she calls it. As her support Professor Lucinda Black, a professor of religious science at UCLA and a high priest of the Church of Satan, joins the case to support her handling the religious details and rules, Eve has no clue about. Working with somebody, who says about herself, she is a devil, is not exactly what Eve fancies, however, Lucy becomes not only a big help, she also becomes a person, Eve feels drawn to. Which is wrong, she should stay away from people, who believed all of this religious nonsense was real.

Together they discover, the priest was not loved by everybody and he has some very dark secrets, that go back a few decades and takes them halfway through the country. 

Falling for a woman, who is a high priest of the Church of Satan has never been Eve's plan, yet it happened. And it seemed like the universe did not want Eve to stay away from Lucy as it gives them another case, this time one, that seemed to lead right into the circles of people, who believed Satan existed and they did his work.

And as if this wasn't bad enough, Eve also ends up in the hand of a drug dealer, who has no intentions letting her leave his basement alive.

But then, out of the blue, Lucy shows up, and she doesn't seem to be afraid of getting killed.

And how the hell does she catch bullets with her hand?

Wrapping her head around the fact that Lucy is not a human, but a Spirit is a lot to ask from a woman like Eve, who always claimed all this religious nonsense was fantasy. Now she finds herself in love with one of these “fantasy” figures and planning to start a family with her. As much as it irritates her, she loves a Spirit and there is no denying in that the things Lucy can do, that can't be explained by science, are real. She also can't die, something that makes Eve believe, now is the right time to have a child. With a partner, who will always be there, who will take care of the child, if anything ever happens to Eve. Although, as Lucy had already proved, she was pretty good in saving Eve's life with her talents.
